European Parliament accepts Ukraine's bid for EU membership


On March 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to members of the European Parliament asking them to admit Ukraine to the European Union. According to the State Agency for State Communications, the European Parliament accepted Ukraine’s application.

“The European Parliament has accepted Ukraine’s application for accession to the European Union. A special accession procedure has begun,” the statement said.

Speaking to members of the European Parliament via video link, Volodymyr Zelensky said that with Ukraine, the EU will be even stronger. He also stressed that Ukraine has rallied the European Union at the cost of thousands of deaths.

“Dears, we have a very motivated people, we are fighting for our rights, freedom, for life, and now for survival. We are fighting to be equal members of Europe. With us, the EU will be stronger. We will prove our strength. Prove that you are with us, prove that you are Europeans – then life will conquer death and light will conquer darkness. Glory to Ukraine!” said Zelensky during his speech.

MEPs gave the President of Ukraine a standing ovation.

Zelensky assured them that no one would break the Ukrainians and that all they want now is for their children to live. Zelensky reminded the MEPs that 16 children had already died in Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
