The cargo ship Mikhail Dudin moored in the port of St. Petersburg. The vessel was carrying 600 tons of impoverished uranium hexafluoride to Russia, morvesti.ru reports.
During its arrival, Greenpeace activists were showing the banner “Welcome to dump!” Similar protests were held not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Kirov, Kazan and Novauralsk.
The cargo was reloaded; it is expected to be delivered by train to Novouralsk (Sverdlovsk region), where special nuclear waste treatment equipment is located.

The nuclear waste that Germany will bring into Russia by the end of 2019 will amount to about 6,000 tons or 725 containers. Deliveries are made on the basis of the contract between Urenco Deutschland and the Russian company TENEX. The two companies’ representatives believe that in such a the way Russia will be able to reduce natural uranium production to 20%. In turn, their opponents note that the main aim of the German side is saving their money.
