Russia made a ‘serious breakthrough’ in developing advanced and unparalleled weapons, Vladimir Putin said at the Defense Ministry’s expanded board meeting on Tuesday. He hinted that the case was the weapons mentioned by him in the spring of 2018.
In March, Putin unveiled the list of their new strategic weapons. In particular, he claimed that Moscow had developed cruise missiles with ‘practically unlimited range’. Russia had to build them to counter the potential threat posed by the U.S. missile defense system, the Russian president explained.
“I hope our newest systems will make think those who got accustomed to militarist and aggressive rhetoric,” Putin stressed today.
These weapons significantly increase the potential of the Russian army and fleet, Putin said. These developments also ‘strengthen the balance of power and global stability’, the Russian leader promised.
“It should be noted that all types of troops were developing in a balanced way, in accordance with the new state armament program. The nuclear triad that plays a key role in preserving the global priority has significantly strengthened,” Putin told top military officials.
According to him, serial production of Avangard hypersonic missile systems has been launched, and successful tests of Russia’s most advanced Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile have been carried out. The Kinzhal air-launched precision hypersonic weapon was placed on combat duty and Peresvet combat lasers have entered duty, Putin noted.
Shortly before, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution ‘Problem of the Militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol, Ukraine, as well as Parts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov’. According to it, Russia’s actions in Crimea, Azov and Black Seas are not only a threat to Ukraine, but they also undermine the security and stability of the entire European region. 66 states supported the document, 19 voted against it, and 72 abstained.
