Ukraine arrests suspect of shooting Maidan protesters


Ukrainian law enforcers detained a National Guard’s soldier who used to serve in the country’s internal troops during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych.

The man is suspected of killing activists on February 20, 2014 on Institutskaya Street in Kyiv, Ukrainska Pravda reports with reference to its own sources close to the matter.

In particular, the detainee might have been involved in the murder of theatre director and activist Oleksandr Khrapachenko. It is known that Khrapachenko was killed by a sniper in the course of Euromaidan protests.

According to the source, the man was arrested by the Military Court on November, 3. He was officially informed of being suspected of premeditated murder and abuse of power .

At the moment, investigators continue to gather materials on the case of former Berkut riot policemen who might have been implicated in 48 protesters on February 20, 2014. In total, 106 people were killed during the protests in Ukraine in the period of December, 2013 – April, 2014.

Berkut, a special unit of pro-Yanukovych’s police, shot dead many Euromaidan activists, including Belarusian citizen Mikhail Zhyzneuski. Special forces soldiers also beat Belsat TV journalists who were filming protests in Cherkasy. Many of them are now hiding in Russia, occupied Crimea and Donbas. interestingly, Russia granted asylum and citizenship to Colonel Sergei Kusyuk, ex-chief of Berkut.
