Poet Nyaklyayeu fined $620 for chanting ‘Long live Belarus’ on May Day


Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, a Belarusian poet and former political prisoner, has been tried in absentia in Leninski district court in Minsk on Wednesday.

Judge Svyatlana Myatlonak imposed BYN 1,150 fine ($620) on him participating in the protest rally on May Day, in particular, for chanting slogans ‘Basta!’ and ‘Long live Belarus!’.

Earlier, the opposition politician was arrested on May, 6 by Belarusian riot police near his home. Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu was sentenced to 5 days in jail for his participation in the ‘non-parasite’ march on 17 February in Minsk. In prison, the poet was not allowed to have a pen. In addition, he was placed in a cell with head lice, could not have an ambulance called and was not given medicine for hypertention when he needed it.
