Fire arms might be distributed among most Belarusians in a war time, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said on Friday when visiting a training ground near the Belarusian town of Ivatsevichy.

“God forbid, but if there is a war, we will provide every family with weapons. And we will defend our territory. However, to do this, we should produce our own [arms],” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.

According to the Belarusian leader, the country should independently produce certain types of weapons needed to defend itself. If there is no lack of arms, every Belarusian adult will get it.

“We have seven million adult population; so, there should be seven million weapons,” he stressed.

However, civilians will be involved in the defense effort only as a last resort, Lukashenka said. “The army should be well trained, well-manned and well-armed,” he added.
