Kremlin has no problem with former envoy to Belarus - media

The Russian leadership is satisfied with former envoy Babich’s work in Belarus, the newspaper Vedomosti reports.

According to a source close to the Kremlin, Babich contributed to pulling the plug on illegal shipments of various goods from Belarus to Russia totalling to $3 bn.

“Babich has played as a catalyst to expose the problems in the bilateral relations, but also created a lot of conflict situations in both Russia and Belarus,” the media outlet quotes a source in the Federal Assembly.

Moscow is not critical of Babich’s performance; he has fully completed his tasks, the authors stress. Now Babich may resume his work in the presidential administration, they add.

On April 30, Mikhail Babich was relieved from the post of Russian envoy in Minsk, which came as a surprise. On the same day, it became known that Dmitry Mezentsev would replace him.

In April 2018, the well-known Russian journalist Sergei Dorenko said in an interview with RTVi that Ambassador Mikhail Babich was given a free hand to bring president Alyaksandr Lukashenka to heel.
