Health Ministry withholds statistics on COVID-19 patients

The Ministry of Health has published another report on the situation with coronavirus infection in Belarus. This time the Ministry would not publish the number of patients infected with coronavirus.

Earlier in similar statements, the Ministry of Health published two main figures: the number of patients recovered from coronavirus and the number of patients who continue treatment in hospitals. Based on these figures, journalists concluded how many people in Belarus were infected with COVID-19. However, in the statement from March 31, the Ministry of Health did not provide this information.

“Over the past 24 hours, 11 people with suspected coronavirus infection have entered the country’s medical institutions. 128 people have been discharged, including 6 patients, previously tested positive for COVID-19,” the report says.

On March 30, the Ministry of Health reported that 47 people had recovered (discharged or waiting to be discharged from hospitals), while 105 people continued treatment (a total of 152 infected). It is not clear from the latest press release whether the 6 discharged patients were among the 47 recovering ones, mentioned by the Ministry of Health the day before. It is also not clear whether COVID-19 test results were positive for those hospitalized with suspected coronavirus in the past days.

On March 31, Ministry of Health also reported that more than 31 thousand tests for coronavirus were conducted in Belarus. The first case of death of a patient with COVID-19 was also officially confirmed.

“The first death case of an old age patient with many chronic diseases, complicated with coronavirus infection, has been registered,” stressed the statement.

The Ministry of Health would not report anything about the situation with the virus in Vitsebsk region.

The first victim of the coronavirus was Viktar Dashkevich — the actor of Vitsebsk National Drama Theater named after Yakub Kolas . He was 75 years old.
