FM about signing Belarus-EU Partnership Agreement

The signing of the Priorities Partnership Agreement between Belarus and the European Union is not making headway, Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey said on Tuesday.

“The agreement contains requirements which are unacceptable for us at this stage. We have not even received an official response from the European Union regarding our proposals,” he said.

According to the top diplomat, there is the possibility of finalizing these documents, but Belarus’ partners should take action and show willingness to sign them.

“These documents, in our view, could be signed tomorrow. But, unfortunately, due to the position of one country, the EU has become hostage to the policies of that country that makes its issues with Belarus an issue of the whole European Union,” Makey stressed.

The negotiations on visa facilitation and readmission began some years ago. Earlier, EU Delegation Head Andrea Wiktorin expressed hope that the agreement would be signed at the end of 2018.

In February, Belarusian Prime Minister Syarhei Rumas showed concern over the lack of a basic agreement between Belarus and the European Union. he called the situation ‘counterproductive’ for the both parties.
