FIDE and Belarus sign contract to hold World Chess Olympiad in Minsk


Belarus has received the right to host the World Chess Olympiad in 2022. It was also decided that Belarus will hold the Chess World Cup among women and men in 2020 and 2021.

“Now you can create a chess calendar, create a more attractive product for our partners, and the main goal is to make chess a sport accessible all over the world,” said FIDE Head Arkady Dvorkovich.

The head of the federation has met with Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Minsk and said he considers the application of Belarus strong and of high quality, TASS writes.

“I, as the leader of FIDE, am very pleased that the Olympiad, as well as the World Cup among men and women, will be held in Minsk. Today a contract has been signed, in the last few months this document was actively being finalized, we managed to agree on all the points. At the meeting, the head of Belarus confirmed that all international chess competitions will be held at the highest level,” Dvorkovich added.

The 2020 World Chess Olympiad will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk.
