Belsat TV streams Auschwitz liberation anniversary


On January 27, the solemn event was held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland; about 200 surviving prisoners took part in it. The venue was the territory of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

Representatives of 50 states and international organizations (Council of Europe, European Council, UN, UNESCO) took part in the event. The Belarusian delegation was headed by Deputy Chairman of the Council of the National Assembly Anatol Isachanka, the Russian one — by Ambassador Sergei Andreyev, Ukraine and Lithuania will be represented by Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Gitanas Nausėda.

The official part of the celebrations included a welcoming address by Poland’s President Andrzej Duda. The special focus was on the speeches made by surviving prisoners.

The Nazi Auschwitz death camp was liberated on 27 January 1945 by Red Army soldiers. According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum data, 1.1 million people were killed in its crematoriums and gas chambers, 90% of them Jews. About 7,000 prisoners waited for the release.
