Belarusian viewers ask state-run provider to add Belsat TV into television service

Beltelecom, the national telecommunications operator, asked followers on Twitter what TV stations its Zala television service is short of.

Most commentators asked Beltelecom to add Belsat TV into Zala.

More Ukrainian and English-language channels would also do good, some Twitter users said.

Belsat TV is the only Belarusian language independent television channel. It was formed in 2007 by a group of Belarusian and Polish journalists as part of Telewizja Polska S.A. in partnership with Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several European governments and foundations.

Belsat TV broadcasts nearly 20 hours a day all year round. Its original content is prepared by more than 100 associates from all over Belarus supported by around 80 editors, managers and technicians in Warsaw. Its correspondents based in Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Czechia, Germany, Belgium and Great Britain provide additional news material. Belsat TV exists and develops further despite all repressive media laws in Lukashenka-led Belarus. Belsat TV, which has broken the state-owned television monopoly on reporting Belarusian news, is not included in Beltelecom’s feature packages.
