Belarus, Russia to discuss scrapping roaming charges


The Belarusian Ministry of Communications and Informatization and the Russian Ministry of Communications are expected to discuss the abolition of roaming charges between the two countries in Q1 2018.

Belarusian Minister Syarhei Papkou announced the intention in an interview with Economic Strategy.

“The possibility to scrap roaming charges was discussed at a meeting of the Union State Council of Ministers, which was held in Gomel on December 8. It was attended by heads of the two departments. During the meeting we agreed to hold a joint session of the two ministries in Q1 2018. Our aim is the detailed study of issues related to the removal of roaming charges between Belarus and Russia,” the minister said.

First and foremost, the strategy of cooperation should be defined at the level of relevant ministries, he added.

In 2017, a proposal to abolish roaming charges was voiced by speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.
