In the commentary to the Belarusian office of the Radio Vatican, the Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus, Archbishop Gabor Pinter, said that one of the main achievements in the relationship between the Church and the Belarusian state in the last quarter of a century is the existence of religious freedom.

“Of course, I do not want to idealize the situation. We should not think that everything is perfect. But we have a desire to have a good relationship. And it is happening at the highest level between the Holy See and the Belarusian state. There is good will on both sides. However, after working for over a year in Minsk, I can see the existence of issues that still need to be addressed, and we are working on them. Life is like this: we always have to solve problems, but it is important that there is good will on both sides and we are moving forward with it,” the hierarch said.

On November 10, 2017, Archbishop Pinter had an audience with the Pontiff at the Vatican. In the meeting, they discussed various issues, including the possibility of the Pope’s visit to Belarus.

“I can confirm that the issue was also raised. We are working a lot fo r the visit to take place. I want to ask all listeners to pray for this intention, as the situation is not yet ideal, but we hope that it will be soon. Everybody wants it, we all want it,” said Pinter.

November 11, 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Belarus.
