War in Ukraine: Day 5


Here’s how the fifth day of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine unfolded.

In Ukraine

The situation in Kyiv remains under the control of the AFU. Two strong explosions were heard in the city in the evening.

According to Ukrainian presidential adviser Anton Gerashchenko, due to the shelling of Kharkiv, dozens of people died, and hundreds were wounded. Civilians in particular. The city is still being shelled.

Villages in the vicinity of Chernihiv were shelled from Grads. Kyinka and Pavlivka were the most affected. Locals report the destruction of dozens of buildings. There may still be people buried under the rubble.

The mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Boychenko, reported the destruction of a Russian plane, which yesterday bombed the village of Sartana and one of the districts of Mariupol. In the city, there are battles with the use of heavy weapons.

Volodymyr Zelensky signed Ukraine’s application to join the European Union. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that a united Europe wants Ukraine in its union.

The Ukrainian Navy reported that the military from Snake Island are alive and in captivity.

During the Russian offensive in the village of Ivankiv, the historical and local history museum, where about 25 works of the famous Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko were kept, burned down.

The DNR suspended general mobilization. The head of the self-proclaimed republic, Denis Pushilin, said that “the necessary number of the areas, which the mobilization campaign was aimed at, has already been filled.”

The Russians claimed the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. “Energoatom” denies this and says that ZNPP is under complete control of Ukraine and operates stably, providing the country with electricity.

In Russia

In response to the closure of flight space over Europe, Russia is closing its skies to Europe. “Rosaviation” published a complete list of states for which the country’s skies have been closed: Austria, Albania, Anguilla (British Overseas Territory), Belgium, Bulgaria, British Virgin Islands, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Denmark + Greenland + the Faroe Islands + territorial sea, Jersey, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

In Belarus

Negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia took place on the territory of our country. The delegations of the two countries later returned to their capitals for consultations. It is stated that the next meeting will be held at the Belarusian-Polish border in the coming days.

Later it emerged that during telephone conversations, Vladimir Putin told French President Emmanuel Macron that the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine is possible under three conditions. These are recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and ensuring the neutral status of the Ukrainian state.

At the same time, the Defense Ministry of Belarus reported about the drill to be held on March 1-4. It is aimed at training territorial troops. First, they will check the availability and conditions of mobilization resources and hold training camps for persons liable for military service.

Websites of Belarusian ministries (Ministry of Communications and Informatization, Ministry of Defense, and State Military Industrial Committee) were hacked.

In the world

New York State Governor Kathy Hokul signed an executive order prohibiting her state from doing business with Russia, ordered to exclude investments from the country, and accept refugees from Ukraine.

Cyprus closed its air communication with Russia.

Britain decided to transfer an additional 40 million pounds sterling to Ukraine. This money will be used for medical supplies for Ukrainians.

Australia imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on Russian and Belarusian officials.

According to Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius, the Lithuanian capital ceases cooperation with its former partner cities from Belarus and Russia.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stated that his country “will take a neutral position in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.”
