Russia closes case against Belarusian programmer who leaked prison torture videos
The Russian prosecutor’s office has dropped the criminal case against programmer Syarhei Savelyeu, who provided human rights activists with an archive of torture videos filmed in a Saratov colony, Gulagu.net reports.
Previously, Savelyeu was accused of “unauthorized access to computer information.”
At the same time, 18 employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service were fired. All of them were, in one way or another, involved in the torture of prisoners.
Another 11 people were “brought to severe disciplinary responsibility.”
After the publication of three recordings of inmate torture in Saratov TB hospital, a criminal case was initiated. Several heads of the regional prison department were fired.
Syarhei Savelyeu left for France, where he sought political asylum.
