Hungary refuses to extradite volunteer to Belarus

Valyantsin Ulasik was detained in Hungary in November 2021 at the request of the Belarusian authorities. He was facing extradition to Belarus.

“After a long consideration of the case, the Hungarian authorities refused to extradite the activist, who had noticeably helped the detained Belarusians near the Akrestsina jail. Valyantsin is safe and will soon be able to meet with his family and friends,” reports the Center for Belarusian Solidarity.

After the events in August 2020, when Valyantsin Ulasik helped detainees at Akrestsina jail and their relatives, an administrative case was filed against him. In September 2020, he left for Poland.

Ulasik was detained on July 30, 2021, at the Hungarian-Croatian border and taken to the detention center in Budapest. According to the Hungarian police, Valyantsin Ulasik is wanted for allegedly failing to pay alimony, but he has paid all the alimony and his ex-wife has no claims against him.
