‘Vision for independent Belarus’. US Assistant Secretary of State pays tribute to Yanka Kupala

Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell arrived in Belarus on Tuesday. He laid a floral tribute at the monument of prominent Belarusian poet and writer Yanka Kupala (Ivan Lutsevich).

“This is my first visit to Belarus. Today I honored Yanka Kupala’s vision for an independent and sovereign Belarus by visiting his monument and laying flowers,” the press service of the US Embassy in Belarus quotes him.

Earlier, the US Department of State announced Mitchell’s visiting Minsk and holding meetings with Belarusian top officials. On October 31, he is expected to head for Vilnius.

A few weeks ago, Wess Mitchell promised to support Eastern European countries, i.e. ‘frontier states like Ukraine, Georgia, and even Belarus, that offer the surest bulwark against Russian neo-imperialism’.
