Ukraine’s SBU exposes ‘election pyramid’ tasked with vote buying

The ‘election pyramid’ headed by a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada has been recently exposed, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reported on Thursday.

According to the SBU, it worked in several regions of Ukraine and aimed at securing the victory of one of the presidential candidates. The service has not given his/her name.

“The organization has its hierarchy and split of responsibilities. It consists of the head, he is a Ukrainian MP, three coordinators who are responsible for different parts of the state, sub-coordinators in the regions and, in turn, their subordinates,” SBU deputy head Viktor Kononenko said at a briefing on February, 21.

Vote is reported to be one of the pyramid’s tasks.

In view of this, the SBU, together with the General Prosecutor’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are conducting over 30 searches across the country as part of criminal proceedings on the grounds of establishing a criminal organization. As a result of raids, law enforcement officers have seized tens of thousands of dollars, receipts for money and other documents, Kononenko stressed.

It is the citizens of the Russian Federation and Ukrainian nationals working for Russian bodies who play the major role in the organization, the top official added.

As reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law banning Russian nationals and persons suggested by the Russian party to serve as official observers in the presidential, parliamentary, and local elections in Ukraine.
