Ukraine declares Russian diplomat PNG over spy case

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has declared a Russian citizen persona non grata for the deeds that are ‘inconsistent with the status of a consular official’. The man, who worked at Russia’s Consulate General in Lviv, has already left the territory of Ukraine.

According to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), a military pensioner, who resided in Lviv region and headed a public association, was recruited by Russian special services in 2014. The man reportedly dug up information about the activities of Ukrainian politicians, public figures, army, special and law enforcement agencies, foreign military instructors in the west of the country.

Then the Ukrainian citizen passed the collected data to the Russian intelligence officer who worked under the diplomatic cover in Lviv, the SBU reports.

He is suspected of high treason (Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The case papers have been sent to court.
