Ukraine arrests spy suspect who acted in Belarus


Ukrainian security officers unmasked a Russian military intelligence agent who was heading to Voronezh to meet with a handler.

The resident of Zaporizhzha who worked at the state-run defense enterprise Ukroboronprom was recruited by a career officer of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces in the annexed Crimea in 2014.

According to investigators, the man provided the Russian side with the collected information about the Ukrainian military and industrial sector and the political situation in Zaporizhzha region. He used pass information via electronic channels of communication, as well as during personal meetings with the agent handler in the territory of the Russian Federation, Crimea and Belarus.

The arrestee is charged with high treason (Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
