Ukraine arrests Belarus citizen over alleged espionage


Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) detained a Belarusian citizen in Chernihiv region on June, 16.

The man is accused of collecting national security information and its release to a foreign state. Taking into account nature and seriousness of charges, the court decided to let the detainer stand.

The suspect denies the charges. In accordance with Art. 114-1 of the Criminal Code (espionage), he may face up to 15 years in prison. It is not reported which foreign state the detainee allegedly spied for.

It is known that the man does not work and is not married, has no permanent or temporary residence in Ukraine. He claims he has been never convicted of committing a crime before.
