There are 9.4 mln people in Belarus, census figures show

Just over 9.4 million people currently live in Belarus. The National Statistics Committee has released the first results of the census, BelTA informs.

As of October 1, 2019, the population of Belarus amounted to 9,454,790 people, but the data was rechecked by the census. Now there are 9,413,446 people living in the country.

The capital of Belarus has become a city of two million inhabitants: more than 2 million 18 thousand people live in Minsk, according to the census.

The urban population of our country is almost 7.3 million people, or 77.5%. Only 22.5% of the population or 2,113,457 people live in villages. Notably, 53.8% of the population of Belarus are women. Men constitute 46.2%.

At the same time, the analysis of the data collected by the census experts found many errors. Later they had to be corrected.

“We had four Alla Borisovna Pugachiovas, many people over 120 years old. We cleaned out all such cases. It often turned out that people just gave the wrong birth year. All the repetitions, mistakes were eliminated,” assured Ina Miadzvedzeva, head of the National Statistics Committee.

The census was special in the sense that each person had almost three times less time spent on them than during the census in 2009.

“This is preliminary data, we will be processing it until July. But we got the following: each person in the 2019 census had 57 US cents allocated for them, in 2009 it was 1 US dollar and 53 cents. How did this become possible? We attracted sponsorship money, and the work of our staff was free. The share of the national budget in total census expenditures was 28.6% against 93.5% for 2009,” Ina Miadzvedzeva said.

Earlier it was reported that the previous census results will become freely available by February 3, 2020, while the main data will be available by June 1, 2020.

The census was held from October 4 to 30, 2019, and 95% of the country’s population participated in it.
