Strict rules for wearing St. George ribbon in Russia

New restrictions have been introduced on the eve of May 9. The new rules were drafted by the All-Russian Public Movement “Volunteers of Victory”, newspaper “Izvestia” writes.

Under the new rules, the ribbon can be attached only to the jacket lapel. It is prohibited to hang it on the car antenna and a bag, on the head and below the belt.

Russian centers, in particular pro-Russian organization “Young Russia”, will be handing the ribbon in Minsk, Brest and Homiel.

Since the beginning of the military conflict in eastern Ukraine, the St. George ribbon became the symbol of the occupation of the Crimea, as well as pro-Russian separatists and aggression in the Donbass. Until recently, it was used in Belarus on an official level during the celebration of Victory Day, but later it was replaced.

The St. George’s ribbon was not officially banned, but an alternative was offered in the “voluntary-compulsory” order: a red-green ribbon with the colors of the national flag with an apple-tree flower, which should symbolize May, when the Nazi Germany was defeated.
