President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has made a final speech at the 5th Belarusian National Congress.

The speech was surprisingly brief, dry and boring, which is not typical of Lukashenka. Leaving the palace, he was very close to quoting Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s wishes for Crimean pensioners saying: “I wish you all the best! See you! Stay safe!

Interestingly, addressing state control authorities at the first day of the event, the Belarusian leader said: “The words I say from this rostrum is law for you!”

He also explained why Belarusians had become poorer and advided them to hold on: “The Belarusians are wise people, they see what is going on in the world, they understand true causes and difficulties. They realize that in the current circumstances peace, the country’s independence, security are the most important values.”

The 5th Belarusian National Congress kicked off in Minsk on Wednesday. Its participants’ task was to evaluate implementing the program on Belarus’ social and economic development in 2011-2015 and discuss the main provisions of the corresponding program for 2016-2020.
