Russian sailors suspected of trafficking cocaine placed under arrest in Cape Verde

A hearing over the case of the Russian sailors detained on suspicion of drug smuggling was held in Cape Verde.

“The court sanctioned the arrest of the sailors for the period of investigation. When it is over, official charges will be brought. So far, there are no official charges from Cabo Verde’s authorities,” news agency TASS reports with reference to the spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Cape Verde.

They are currently kept at the St. Martin prison in Praia.

On February 1, the local authorities arrested 11 Russian sailors after seizing nearly 10 tons of cocaine aboard. The ship which was bound for Morocco was flying the flag of Panama. It called at the port of Praia as a member of the crew had died.
