In the next four years, Moscow will allocate about 310 bn rubles (€4 bn) for the development of infrastructure in Crimea, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev promised.
He announced the construction of highways, extending the power grid and creating water supply projects. According to Medvedev, half of the funds will be transferred in 2019.
Commenting on the declarations, the news agency DPA suggests that Russia is set to back up its claims to the peninsula with large investments.
After Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Ukraine gradually stopped serving the region with water, gas and electricity. Now Crimea is completely dependent on the supplies from Russia.
Moscow states that it has already invested 45 bn rubles in infrastructure projects in Crimea and created tens of thousands of jobs there. Last year, the bridge over the Kerch Strait connecting Crimea and Russia was opened. According to official data, its construction cost over €3 bn. Its railway part is expected to be put into operation this year.
