Russia and European Commission begin consultations before trilateral meeting with Ukraine on gas

The EU seeks to preserve the transit of gas through Ukrainian territory. To this end, Russia and the European Commission have embarked on consultations before the trilateral meeting with Ukraine, where the prospects for the transit of Russian gas will be discussed.

The contracts signed in 2009 by Gazprom and Naftogaz — on gas supplies to Ukraine and on gas transit through the Ukrainian territory to Europe, will be completed at the end of 2019. The future of gas transit through Ukraine is also being discussed in the context of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction which has already started. This pipeline bypasses the transit countries.

In addition, Russia and the EC plan to discuss the separation of the Baltic countries from the energy systems of Russia and Belarus.

Consultations of the European Commission with the Ukrainian side are planned after this round of negotiations.
