Putin wants new Constitution to have marriage as union of man and woman and mention God

Russian President Vladimir Putin has introduced amendments to the State Duma for consideration in the second reading of the bill on constitutional amendments. They mention the Russian people as the state-forming nation and Russia’s continuity with the USSR.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, quoted by Interfax, reported on the presidential amendments after the meeting of the Council of the Lower House of Parliament.

He noted that the proposal is “an answer to the demand that exists in the society”.

In addition, Vladimir Putin suggests including a provision in the Constitution on the inadmissibility of alienation of parts of Russia’s territory and calls for this. Finally, a ban on municipal employees having foreign accounts and citizenship will be established.

The presidential amendments also refer to marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and mention God.

“The Russian Federation, united by thousands of years of history, while preserving the memory of ancestors who passed on to us the ideals and faith in God, as well as the continuity of the development of the Russian state, recognizes the historically established state unity,” the State Duma speaker read out one of the amendments.

The presidential amendments state that “children are the most important asset of the Russian Federation”.

On January 20, the Russian President introduced a bill to the State Duma on changes to the Constitution, and three days later the document was unanimously adopted in the first reading. The second reading is scheduled for March 10.
