Poland arrests suspect of spying for Russia


Marek W., an employee at one of the country’s ministries, was detained by the Polish Internal Security Agency on 23 March.

A court arrested him for three months, TVP Info reports.

Information about the arrest has been confirmed by Stanislaw Zaryn, a representative of Poland’s special services.

Russian Ambassador Sergei Andreyev has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry of Poland.

According to investigators, the arrestee was in contact with intelligence officers who were working under diplomatic cover and gave them information about investment projects which were of importance to Poland.

As part of his professional duties Marek W. was engaged in strategic projects in Poland’s energy infrastructure and in seeking EU funding for projects to diversify gas supplies from Russia. The man reportedlt feed Russia’s FSB with information about the Polish government’s planned actions over the construction of Nord Stream 2.

Marek W. may face up to 10 years in prison for espionage.
