Not patrolling, but consulting: Russian police at European Games in Minsk

The Russian police will not be patrolling the streets of Minsk during the 2019 Second European Games and the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championship.

However, law enforcement officers from Russia will still be involved during the two sports events. According to the Belarusian Interior Ministry, their recent statement about the presence of Russian officers in Belarus has been misinterpreted.

“Russian police personnel will not be present at sport facilities and in public places. Instead they will provide consulting aid and guidance during sport events taking into account experience accumulated in the course of world-level sport events in Russia, including the latest football world championship in 2018,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes the ministry.

At the same time, Russian specialists will provide coordination and information assistance to Belarusian operation centres which will be tasked to ‘ensure the proper level of protection of public order and security’.

At Tuesday’s press conference Belarusian Interior Minister Ihar Shunevich said Russian policemen would be invited to assist the Belarusian side in the upcoming European Games.

The Second European Games will be held in Minsk in June 21-30, 2019.
