No.2 role: Nazarbayev’s daughter becomes Kazakhstan’s Senate speaker

Dariga Nazarbayeva, the retired leader’s daughter and ex-Head of the parliamentary committee on international relations, defense and security, has been elected Chairperson of the Senate, the upper house of the Kazakh parliament.

The Chairman of the Senate is a person elected by the Senate among the members of the House by a secret voting majority. The candidature on the post is nominated by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Placing Nazarbayeva’s name in nomination has turned to be one of the first decisions taken by Acting President Kasym Zhomart Tokayev after his inauguration.

In accordance with the country’s constitution, the Senate Speaker assumes presidential powers in the event of the president’s resignation or death.

On Tuesday, Nursultan Nazarbayev, 78, unexpectedly announced his retiring after three decades in power.
