NATO: friend or foe? New series of international talk show on Belsat TV

A new series of The Territory of Truth debates has been recorded in Vilnius. This time, the talk show with the participation of international experts focuses on the activities of NATO and the Alliance’s resistance to Russia. The program is hosted by prominent journalists from Belarus and Ukraine — Svyatlana Kalinkina and Vitaly Portnikov.

The international debates series broadcast on Belsat was created as a platform for experts from different countries, discussing, on air, the most important political problems of the post-Soviet space. The program is recorded in the one-for-one format, with no cuts or deleted remarks. In contrast to talk shows shown on Russian TV channels, The Territory of Truth is a balanced discussion with the participation of authoritative politicians and experts from different countries.

The first four series of The Territory of Truth on Vladimir Putin’s policies were timed to presidential elections in Russia. They were shown in February and March 2018. The discussions focused on the Kremlin’s policy in relation to Russia’s western neighbours.

This year’s occasion was the 70th anniversary of the NATO formation, as well as the 20th anniversary of accession of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, which will be celebrated on March 12.

“The hottest topic today in our region: NATO — friend or foe? The hottest topic for Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia: is NATO a salvation or a potential danger,” Svyatlana Kalinkina outlines the main issues of the talk show.

Vitaly Portnikov — a well-known Ukrainian publicist, writer, and an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity — co-hosted the program with his Belarusian colleague.

Vitaly Portnikov

“I am a citizen of the country, where the majority of the population has spoken for many years against Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. Although for me, there has never been an alternative. I realized that if we did not join NATO, sooner or later the troops of the Russian Federation would be in our territory. As soon as we wanted to become an independent state, Moscow would immediately begin to annex our territory, to kill our citizens, to influence our choice,” Portnikov explains his participation in the program.

According to him, it is for this very reason that a debate series on NATO and Russia is important for the audience of the former Soviet Union.

“I want people to know that we in Europe have no alternative. We either become members of NATO, or lose independence, freedom, values, life,” adds Vitaly Portnikov.

During the program cycle consisting of four series, the hosts will discuss the conditions in which the North Atlantic Alliance was formed, its activities, prospects and response to the policy of the present-day Russia. Among the debates participants there are 16 experts and politicians from Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, and the United States.
