On Tuesday, the Mothers-328 activists have launched hungerstriking in the village of Vostrau (Minsk region).
The movement includes women whose relatives are serving sentences for drug use (Article 328 of the Criminal Code).
The state-run TV channel Belarus 1 has recently reported that Belarusian Parliament will consider easing the Belarusian legislation on some types of drug-related crimes on June, 13. However, the hunger strikers and their supporters believe that making the announced amendments will be not enough.
The main demands of the Mothers-328 movement remain the same: meeting with president Alyaksandr Lukashenka; conducting a reform which would result in mitigating sentences of the convicted under Art. 328-3 and 328-4 and granting amnesties. They believe that punishment for drug users is disproportionate and too severe, e.g. up to 10 years behind bars for half a gram of some drug.
It is not the first hunger strike that has been staged by the movement.
