Minsk police keep watch over ex-political prisoner’s paying tribute to fallen soldiers


Opposition politician and former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich has laid flowers at the common grave of Soviet soldiers in Tolbukhin Boulevard in Minsk.

Today Belarus is celebrating Independence Day. On 3 July 1944, the Belaarusian capital was liberated from German invaders.

About 15 people attended the ceremony of laying flowers. Plainclothes policemen were monitoring the participants, our correspondent reports.

No one was detained, but the police filmed the faces of all attendees ans put down the passport data of some.
