Minsk authorities deny permission to hold march of solidarity with journalists

Minsk city executive committee has barred opposition and trade union activist from holding a march of solidarity with independent journalists on September, 15.

The organizers intended to march from the Kastrychnik cinema to the Opera House and rally there. According to co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Vital Rymasheuski, the city authorities referred to the fact that the venue was not on the list of places qualified for mass events. Although the Kastrychnik cinema surrounding area has always been a venue for authorized opposition rallies; this year, the Freedom Day celebration was staged near the Opera House.

The activists will discuss their further actions on September, 10.

“We will decide on the format of the event in Minsk, our joint position will be announced soon. All proposals for a campaign of solidarity with journalists remain front and centre – the solidarity rally in Minsk, actions in support of journalists in regions, the appeal to the international community, discussing the situation with human rights violations in Western countries’ parliaments,” Rymasheuski told belsat.eu.

The application was filed by Vital Rymasheuski, Vasil Palyakou, the leader of the United Civic Party, and Yuri Hubarevich, Chairman of the movement For Freedom.

In August, an unprecedented wave of media workers’ arrests took place in Belarus.
