Lukashenka threatens ministers with sack in case of poor economic performance

Tough personnel decisions will be made if this year’s plans are not fulfilled, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said during Thursday’s government conference to discuss economic performance in 2019, the results of the year and the five-year period, draft forecasts, budget and main monetary guidelines for 2020.

Four out of seven forecast indicators approved for 2019 are being fulfilled. Targets for exports, labour productivity and gross domestic product have not yet been met, Belarusian Prime Minister Syarhei Rumas reported at the meeting.

In turn, the Belarusian leader reminded the top officials of their ‘personal responsibility’.

If performance targets for this year are not hit, all those responsible – starting with the prime minister – will have to retire. I warned you last year at the time we were making plans for the year 2019. This is why there is nothing surprising about it,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

The economy should continuously improve well-being and quality of life, which cannot be achieved without economic growth, he said. However, according to the head of state, the growth is not only modest but also ‘extremely unstable’.
