During Tuesday’s meeting with Minsk officials, President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has made a comment on the coronavirus situation in the country.
“The healthcare system that we have, the discipline and manageability have helped us overcome this challenge in such a densely populated and open city as Minsk. I have just talked to Natallya Kachanava [the chairperson of the Council of the Republic] to see what the situation was this morning. I can say that we have coped with this challenge,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka.
The capital city of Minsk was the worst-hit region, because its population is around 2 million and mobility is high, he said. Lukashenka also noted that the authorities did not close borders or make people stay at their homes. According to him, they did not want to ‘push the panic’.
“We have pulled through it. God willing we will be doing better and better. We need to steer clear from this trouble bit by bit and prevent another wave of the epidemic. This is vital for us,” the Belarusian leader added.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, Belarusian health professionals have registered the total of 64,003 persons infected with the novel coronavirus, 436 patients have died.
Last week, Alyaksandr Lukashenka expressed the opinion that Belarus had almost got over the coronavirus infection.
As reported earlier, even on the back of the increasing infection rate, the Belarusian authorities did not introduce any quarantine measures. Alyaksandr Lukashenka claimed that imposing a nationwide lockdown would not improve the situation in Belarus. In his opinion, such steps might deal a crippling blow to the daily life of the nation. Although the Belarusian leader admitted that the recommendations by the WHO should be studied in detail, he stressed the country would run its own course.
