Lost feast: 26th anniversary of Belarus independence’s constitutionality

On 25 August 1991, the Belarusian nation fulfilled its cherished dream of independence.

26 years ago, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus gained the status of constitutional law.

On 27 July 1990, the Supreme Soviet adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, which was the first step towards the independence. However, only on 25 August 1991 the Declaration was given the status of constitutional law. It happened after the failed coup d’etat in Moscow and the biggest-ever Soviet strike which took place in Belarus.

Then, under the pressure of the parliamentary opposition headed by Zyanon Paznyak, the pro-Communist majority of the Supreme Council of Belarus voted for independence from Moscow.

Currently, Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime does not celebrate this date.
