Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš said oil supplies to Belarus through Latvian ports were possible. He said this on January 16 after a meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
Latvian Prime Minister cited transport and logistics as an example of possible cooperation between the countries, BelTA informs.
“On the one hand, oil products can be exported from Belarus through Latvian ports. But another possibility can be discussed — the import of oil from around the world through Latvia to Belarus. We are already discussing such opportunities,” said Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš after a conversation with Lukashenka.
According to him, the Latvian government is “highly interested in the development of business opportunities,” but the specific timing depends on the companies.
“It is necessary to communicate with terminals, railway companies that will provide these supplies,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing Latvia’s interest in longer-term relations.
On the eve of the visit, the Latvian ambassador to Minsk noted that the scheme of the Belarusian-Latvian cooperation regarding oil products has been worked out and has good results. Thus, in 2019 the export of oil products via Latvian ports to Belarus by rail amounted to 3.7 million tons.
