Kazakhstan leery of Russia’s initiative to introduce single currency in EAEU

Kazakhstan is not in favour of the Russian National Payment Council’s idea to introduce on the introduction of a single electronic currency in the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union, National Economy Minister Timur Suleymanov said.

“We do not support the initiative,” he stressed.

The Russian Ministry of Finance supported the idea of introducing a single currency in the electronic system of cross-border payments between EAEU countries. Conceptually, the currency will be like European ECU which preceded the euro. According to them, such electronic means is needed to simplify mutual settlements under the threat of anti-Russian sanctions.

But Astana believes that there is no need to introduce a single currency in the EAEU.

“We have repeatedly voices our position; I share it as both private citizen and government official. In my opinion, the national currency is a symbol of our sovereignty; it is nearly the same as the national anthem, flag and emblem, so we must protect, develop and maintain it and any other possible quasi or proxy currency should not be allowed,” the minister explained.
