ISIS supporter from Belarus sentenced to 12 years in prison


The 34-year-old Belarusian has been found guilty of inciting racial, national or religious hatred, illegal actions with firearms, as well as producing and distributing pornography. The defendant was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

According to the press service of the Vitsebsk regional court, the case was heard by a visiting Collegium of the Polatsk District Court. The trial was open, but no media representative were present.

According to investigators, in 2013, the accused went to Germany, where he met with refugees from Chechnya and Dagestan, he adopted radical Islam. Then he began to spread in “VKontakte” promotional materials of the Islamic state.

In 2015, he was deported from Germany, but did not stop his activities. In addition to his work in the “VKontakte”, he began to send religious extremist materials through WhatsApp and Telegram.

Last year, the Islamist became interested in explosives and acquired chemical and electrical components for their manufacture. Using the instructions found on the Internet, he produced an explosive which was stored in his apartment before it was found in October 28, 2016 by law enforcement officials.

In addition, the defendant was accused of spreading porn through social networks.

Thus, he was found guilty of inciting religious and social hatred, dissemination of porn, illegal manufacture and possession of explosives.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison of strict regime.

The verdict has not entered into force and may be appealed by the accused in a higher court.
