Human rights defender from Mahiliou sentenced to 10 days of arrest

On May 15th , the police detained freelance journalist Alyaksandr Burakou (Sasha Raikan) — a member of Mahiliou branch of the Human Rights Center Viasna. He was later punished with 10 days of administrative arrest, spring96.org reports.

Alyaksandr Burakou (Sasha Raikan) was arrested about 11:00 at the apartment, where he lived. Policemen took the human rights activist to the Leninski district police department of Mahiliou. At 17:30, the Leninski district court started to consider his case. Neither Ales’s parents, nor human rights activists were allowed to attend the trial.

As a result, the Leninski borough court of Mahiliou found Burakov guilty of having allegedly participated in a solidarity action with Syarhei Tsikhanouski on May 6th near Mahiliou TDF. The member of Viasna was sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest. He will serve his sentence in the temporary detention center of Mahiliou Regional Executive Committee.

Alyaksandr Burakou (Sasha Raikan) is a nephew of human rights activist and journalist Alyaksandr Burakou (senior), who earlier this week was sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest for alleged participation in an unauthorized mass event.
