On April 30, Syarhei Lazar was fired from the chief physician position of Vitsebsk Medical Emergency Hospital. Belarus’ Vitsebsk region ranks second after Minsk in terms of the number of patients with coronavirus.
Earlier, popular Belarusian news portal TUT.BY had published a report about working conditions at the healthcare centre.
Many Belarusians believe that the head doctor was discharged from employment on the back of the journalists revealing the details of the medics’ work in the so-called ‘red area’ amid the coronavirus epidemic.
When reached by Belsat TV, Yuliya Baradun, Spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, has declined to comment on the situation. Earlier, she said that Lazar’s employment had been terminated by agreement of the parties, and the publication was not related to the dismissal.
Syarhei Lazar had been heading Medical Emergency Hospital since 2015.
As of May 4, the Belarusian Health Ministry has registered the total of 17,489 persons infected with the nevel coronavirus, 103 COVID-19 patients have died.
