‘High risk of getting coronavirus’. Indian students ask to take them from Belarus

About a thousand Indian citizens claim they are being trapped in Belarus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

 

They ask the Indian authorities to send a plane and bring them home.

The appeal by the students from Gudjarat was published by by the Indian media outlet divyabhaskar.co.in.

The Indians who signed the appeal study Medicine in four Belarusian universities. According to them, the country has not imposed any quarantine measures, and there is high risk of contracting COVID-19. The local authorities are of no help, they stress.

The parents of the students say they are worried about their children. The urged the Indian government to arrange their return, but there has been no response yet.

As of May 4, the Belarusian Health Ministry has registered the total of 17,489 persons infected with the nevel coronavirus, 103 COVID-19 patients have died. However, the Belarusian authorities have not introduced any tough quarantine measures yet. President Alyaksandr Lukashenka believes that imposing a nationwide lockdown would not improve the situation in Belarus. In his opinion, such steps might deal a crippling blow to the daily life of the nation. Although the Belarusian leader admitted that therecommendations by the World Health Organisation should be studied in detail, he stressed the country would run its own course.

It should be noted that the WHO has never urged the authorities to place the country under curfew. Its experts concluded at the end of its assessment of the country’s response to the pandemic that Belarus needs to introduce community-wide steps to increase physical distancing, e.g. postponing large gatherings, placing in quarantine contacts of confirmed patients, introducing options for teleworking, and distance learning for educational institutions, etc.
