Exact date still unknown: Top official spills no beans about presidential election

The next election campaign – it is still unknown whether it will be parliamentary or presidential – might take place in autumn, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC), said on Friday.

According to her, the Belarusian law allows holding the two campaigns simultaneously, but as a rule, the presidential race does not overlap with other elections in Belarus.

“The president has reiterated many times that there will be two election campaigns: one in 2019 and the other in 2020. No one knows when each of the campaigns will be held and which of them will come first. The Central Election Commission does not have information about it yet. We hope that the mystery will be unraveled during the constitutional address of the head of state. As a rule, the head of state makes important political statements during this address,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Yarmoshyna.

In her opinion, it makes sense to schedule the election campaign for the end of autumn. The top official would choose December 1, Sunday to be the election day.
