Ex-political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich seeking nomination for presidency

The organising committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada is going to name its chairman Nikolai Statkevich a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.

The final decision will be taken on January 17 at a session of the Belarusian National Congress.

“First and foremost, this is special trust of the party and my associates. We cherish no illusions about the elections and the election campaign. The way of counting votes in our country is notorious. But after the nomination, I will be seeking my right to participate in the political campaign,” Statkevich told Belsat.

Mikalai Statkevich, one of the leaders of Belarusian opposition, was a presidential candidate in 2010. After the post-election protests he spent over 5 years in prison. He is currently under a 8-year ban on running for presidency due to the latest conviction.

“In accordance with the Constitution, criminal record is not an obstacle to campaigning for presidency, only the Electoral Code provides for such restrictions. We will push for removing them,” the politician added.

A few days ago, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chair of the Central Election Commission, stated that the presidential election in Belarus would be held no later than August 30, 2020, and the election of deputies to the House of Representatives – no later than September 6, 2020.
