Event in memory of murdered journalist Pavel Sheremet held in Kyiv

Two years ago, the 44-year-old journalist of Belarusian origin was killed in Kyiv.

The memorial event to remember and honour Pavel Sheremet was held in the Ukrainian capital on Friday morning.

It took place at the intersection of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Franko streets, where the explosion occurred. BriJournalists, politicians, diplomats and ordinary citizens set a memory corner at this place – they brought flowers and lit candles. Many participants were wearing T-shirts with the inscription ‘Who Killed Pavel?’ and carrying placards with calls to investigate the death of Sheremet.

Pavel Sheremet, who for the last five years had lived and worked in Ukraine, in Kyiv, died on the morning of July 20th in car explosion. The car he was driving belonged to Alena Prytula — the owner of the Ukrainskaya Pravda online media outlet. According to law enforcement, the explosive had the power of 400-600 grams of TNT. The National Police of Ukraine opened a criminal case under article ‘deliberate murder’.

Law enforcement bodies of Ukraine believe that Sheremet was killed for his professional activity. The Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said that the Russian special services may have been involved in the journalist’s death while Moscow called this version a ‘Russophobic act’. Although president Petro Poroshenko declared he took control of the case, the Ukrainian police have so far failed to establish the identity of the criminals who had killed the journalist.
