Eight Ukrainian soldiers taken captive by pro-Russian forces in Donbas

Eight Ukrainian servicemen have been taken prisoner by Russia-backed separatists due to a mistake in Donetsk region on Wednesday.

“According to preliminary information, eight members of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, moving by truck near the village of Novotroyitske, mistakenly deviated from their route this morning and entered the temporarily occupied territory, where they were detained by members of the Russian armed forces,” UNIAN reports with reference to the press centre of Ukraine’s Joint Forces Operation.

The Ukrainian side is reported to be making every effort to trace the Ukrainian soldiers’ whereabouts and get them back to the country; the investigation into the incident is underway. Separatists’ media outlets have not provided any information about the captured Ukrainians yet.

On May 21, Andriy Bohdan, who was appointed Head of the presidential administration by Volodymyr Zelensky, said that the issue of Ukraine-Russia peace agreements might be put to a nationwide referendum.
