Brest officials consider banning rallies on Victory Day

Brest City Executive Committee has amended the plan of Victory Day celebrations, the chairman of the executive committee, Alyaksandr Rahanchuk reported at a briefing on April 16, Belta.by wrote.

The head of Brest region executive committee said that on May 9, it would be possible to come to Brest Fortress to lay flowers, while mass events would most likely be banned.

“I think we won’t prohibit anyone from coming to the fortress, it’s absolutely not patriotic and human. But we won’t organize a march, some mass events or rallies either,” said Mr Rahachuk.

Local authorities have decided not to cancel the festive salute in Brest Fortress and promised to “try to spread people out”.

On April 16, an appeal to local residents appeared on the website of Pinsk City Executive Committee. It urges people “not to visit crowded places without an urgent need,” and also encourages them not to leave the city.
